The North Fork Ranger District in the Salmon – Challis National Forest is preparing to begin spring prescribed burning projects for 2012.  Implementation of these burns will be dependent on weather conditions and are scheduled to begin March 12 and end July 1.  Prescribed burns are planned for the following locations:

  1. Break 1, Unit 1 between the Sage Creek road west to Indian Creek and north below Ulysses Lookout
  2. Hughes Creek Units #5a and 5b west of the Granite Mountain Lookout.

Residents and recreational users who plan to travel in these areas during this time period should contact Mike Smith or Tom Gonnoud at the Forest Service Office in North Fork Idaho at 208-865-2700 for specific information. The Forest Service will have personnel posted in the vicinity of prescribed burning activities. It is extremely important that residents and recreational users contact the Forest Service if they are planning to be in these areas.

The prescribed burning treatments are intended to achieve a variety of objectives such as:

Reduce the current risk of losing ecosystem components such as large fire-resistant trees; Alter the existing fuel profile to facilitate fire suppression activities while providing for human safety, community protection and stand maintenance over time; Reduce fuel loadings and change fuel arrangements to reduce flammability; Reduce hazardous fuel loadings in vicinity of structures and/or private property.
